Some international barriers can be obvious, others far more subtle to break down.
At a time when trade barriers are in the news, good to see the continued growth of a system which promotes business. Whilst ATA carnets in a technical sense are about exhibitions, fairs, or equipment, they are really about international cooperation.
Nobody in business wants to be paying duties, suffer travel delays, or have high admin loads. A carnet helps with those and continues to spread the ability for countries to trade.
The Gulf States are a good example. Qatar is well down the carnet route and will officially launch 1st August 2018. The UAE are making the most of their recent membership, in terms of improving trade and as a platform for relationship building.
Dubai will host the World Chambers Congress in 2021, an international forum for chamber leaders and business to share best practices. With over 1000 delegates from 100 countries expected to attend, mutual opportunity will be in abundance.
Continued Growth
Peru are the latest official applicant to the carnet family, their Ministry of Trade and Tourism recently announcing a wish to take part as soon as possible. Systems are already being put in place to adhere to ATA carnet requirements.
They recognise the benefit to their exporters, a chance for easier trade with 77 other countries. The fact Peru are to host the Pan American Games in 2019 had an influence, similar to Brazil ensuring carnet compliance for the 2016 Olympics.
Following the election in Colombia, possible there will be a further South American application. Officials already asked to look into the possibility.
Those countries represent a substantial trade opportunity, although a rather larger market is worth keeping an eye on. The 1.4 billion people in China are increasing their international focus for the future.
